For science! [Oct. 13th, 2009|03:39 pm]

Attention, ladies and gentlefolk!

In the Museum of the History of Science (that's the Old Ashmolean, folks - oldest museum in the world), runs from today until the 21st of February 2010.

So exciting! Guh, so many amazing artists that I'd  love to see, particularly Datamancer (he of the spectacular computer mods), and Haruo Suekichi (the watchmaker). The exhibition blog has better pictures, and a list of artists.

Another reason to organise a trip to Oxford!

[Current Music |Shashkin (Hefner Remix) - Omar Faruk Tekbilek]

Blahhh, I feel like I've been so busy this past week, where does the time go?! I don't feel like I've even had time to relax after finishing uni, yet I don't know what I've been doing. Job hunting, of course, as while I do like my part-time job it doesn't pay the rent. Of course there was the epic five-day drama of the last series of Torchwood last week (which I will not even START on. OMG, Davies, you bastard), plus being awesomegeeky with
[info]cicak  last week and going to see the midnight showing of ☼Star Trek☼, again.

Of course, I also (...drumroll) got my uni results! I passed! Got a 3rd, which, I know, is not great, but it's a pass which is all I was wanting as I've had such an awful time at uni this year. It is such a relief to have this done and over with, hurrah! (Also scary, obviously, but I'm not even think of graduate plans right now.) I don't actually graduate until November, though. On Friday the 13th - cheers YSJ. But, the fact that it'll be in ~York Minster~ more than makes up for it.

Second bit of good news is that pidgey pidge got home safe!
This being the racing pigeon that Kafers and I looked after for a week after she turned up in our kitchen late last month. We chased her outside, but she was back in the house as soon as our backs were turned (we keep the back door open in hot weather). She wasn't flying, so we herded her into the utility room, caught her and got the numbers off her rings. I managed to contact the owner, and he asked us to keep a hold of her for a couple of days until she was strong enough to get home. Apparently she'd flown all the way from France (!) and had become exhausted only 50 miles short of reaching home in Sunderland. Anyway, weather conditions meant we had her for a week, as pigeons need clear skies and no rain or fog to fly well. I (foolishly) trusted the Met Office forecast when it said Friday morning would the last good weather before a week of rain, so we let her off then, and off she flew! However, the storms arrived only two hours later (some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen in England!), so I was really worried that she hadn't made it, especially when I heard nothing from the owners.
However! I got a lovely thank-you card from them today, saying that she had indeed made it back! Ahhhh, I am so relieved, I was so worried that after all that TLC she hadn't made it x) To you, pidgey pidge!

I have the day off tomorrow, so I'll be going in to uni to sign off (and possibly lounge in the library while I still can), and maybe buy some plants from the market. That'll be all the shopping I'll be doing, as I shouldn't really be spending money right now, but it really annoys me to see the yard looking so brown.

Then I must get some housework done, we have an inspection next week. Also want to get some sewing or doll work done, as I have done NONE since I finished uni. My poor resins look so neglected. Also possibly... er... play masses of FFXII, as I seem to be addicted. Ann, what have you done?!?

Dissertation is IN! It is a big pile of shite because I am fucking idiot who can't get herself together, but hey, it's done at last. Also had my final presentation today. Feel alright about that, it went pretty good (I think). Managed to fill up the 12 minutes, hardly refer to my notes, and answer all the questions reasonably intelligently.

So, that's all my uni work done! Til re-sit time anyway, because I seriously messed up this year, but, I'd rather not talk about that.

Anyway! So looking forward to next week, doing hobby things again, &c &c. For now, I just need some sleep -_- Adrenalin wearing off, energy crash in 5, 4, 3..

Now, must get back to packing! I managed to beg the weekend off work, so I'm off up to Scotland for the weekend with my parents to visit family. It's only for two days, but I cannot wait x) It's been three years since I was last there, I miss it so!

Will do a proper LJ post next week sometime, hopefully.

I will see you shiny GQMFs next week :D Ciao!!!

[Current Music |'Rock Lobster' - The B-52's]

I don't usually do memes, but, what the hell.
I got tagged by [info]cicak

Things that made me happy today

1. Going to the National Railway Musuem!
The largest collection of steam engine history in the country is a 30min walk from my house, and yet it's been about 8 years since I last visited. I've been meaning to go again for a while, and I finally got round to it today. It's a fantastic museum. My favourites were the Chinese engine that completely dwarfed all the others (and I mean huge like Iron Council -esque), and the cut-away engine: an actual steam train, sliced in half and with the wheels and pistons moving, showing how everything works. Those and the warehouse, which is stuffed full of historical bits-and-pieces that they don't have the space to display.
My main reason for visiting, however, was the A1 Tornado. When I heard it was only going to be on display here for two weeks, I had to go see. It's the first steam locomotive to be built in Britain in 50 years, it took 18 years to complete, and cost £3 million, mostly donations from people determined to see this project happen. It's a fantastic story and I can't wait to see her out working and bringing a little bit of elegance back to our railways.

2. Delicious haul of food from the Korean shop.
Kimchiiii, om nom nom.
I found a dessert that I have not seen since I was Japan! It's a fish-shaped soft waffle filled with ice cream and azuki paste. Yummy.
I have such a clear memory of sitting outside the supermarket in Okazaki and eating one, after we'd been cycling round the city one night and decided to go buy ice cream. Didn't think I'd ever find one here :)

3. Seeing my parents. *^_^*
I went into town after the museum, so I went to visit Mum at work. It's handy that she works in the city centre, and in a relatively quiet shop, so I can pop in and have a natter if I haven't seen her in a while :)
I also ran into Dad completely by chance at the museum. Yeah, he was there to see the Tornado too, we had a little geek-out xD

4. Treating myself to lunch in town.
Curling up in a warm corner of Caffe Nero with a obscenely cream- and sugar-laden coffee and reading my loaned copy of 'Raffles: the Amateur Cracksman'. OMG, thank you, Sarah, for lending me it. It's AMAZING, I love it.

5. Finding a Good Omens reference in an unexpected place. (GO always makes a day better!)
Aziraphale and Crowley cameo in Friendly Hostility.

I'm gonna cheat and do more than 5:

6. Watching Merlin behind-the-scenes videos.
I love this daft little show. There had bloody well better be a second series.
The boys are as silly and adorable off-stage as on. Colin Morgan and Bradley James heroicly battling a ferocious, er... house spider.

7. MORRIS DANCING DALEKS

I tag... whoever wants tagging! Go for it.

[Current Music |'Tell Me Where It Hurts' - Garbage]

It's been so dark these past few days, not just just overcast but DARK, that it's starting to get quite disorientating. Scary, even. Noon looks pretty much the same as 9am and 4pm. It's 2pm now, I should not have to put lights on! True, my house is always rather dark thanks to the... thriftiness of Victorian architecture, but this is ridiculous.
I was walking home at 1/1.30 and cars had their lights on. It ain't right.

But the weirdest thing: I was wondering why everything just looked odd and slightly wrong, and I realised that there were no shadows.
There are NO SHADOWS. It's weird.
Insert Shadow Secretary joke here. Although really, it feels like something out of UnLunDun. Was there a shadow-eating thing in that or am I thinking of something else?  (What would be the York equivalent of UnLunDun? Bork'd?)
Hmph. I'm off to make some tea.
 -  -  -  -  -
Right, enough whining! On a completely different topic: is anybody doing anything fun for Bonfire Night?
I'm probably not, as I don't think there's a firework display in York this year, but I'm going to try and find out if there's at least a bonfire nearby. Haven't been to one in years.

Well, I TRIED to listen to the big switch-on this morning, but I obviously wasn't as awake as I thought I was, because all I can remember is hearing applause and cheering, thinking that was probably a good sign, then going back to sleep. Well, it's 13.30 now, and I'm pretty sure I still exist, so I assume there's been no terrible black hole-related accidents yet. (I know, I know, they haven't started actually colliding things yet.)

Still, only 45 minutes and counting til Torchwood will be here to make the apocalypse a gayer place save us all!

Second year of uni is DONE! Almost. But for the most part: DONE!

The third module (involving a work placement) is the only one not over, as the work is not due 'til THE END OF JULY, but as that module is causing me so much grief, I will not talk about it.
However, the International English module was wonderful. I, for some reason, decided to write about Singaporean English for both my assignments, but I'm so glad I did: Singlish is AMAZING. The language situation of Singapore is just so interesting, and Singlish (that is, colloquial Singapore English) is wonderful; complicated but delightful. The particles especially, even though I may never be wise to the meaning of lah and all its intricacies. I am rather pleased with my epic second essay, shame it was a day late :/ I have a Problem with deadlines, I really will have to get my arse into gear next year.
The Japanese continuation class I did this term was also really satisfying. Although it only covered things I'd already done at Yamasa, I'd totally forgotten most of it, and I feel like it's stuck a lot better this time around. I'm hoping that Sensei will find a way to continue the course next year, even if it's just casual classes outside of uni.

However, thinking about miserable uni- and career-related things as little as is practically possible, I have things to look forward to this summer!
Two family weddings (one in Scotland, hurrah! I miss it so much, it's been well over a year since I was last there, and that was very briefly). Hopefully a big doll-meet somewhere in Yorkshire, providing I can actually make any of the dates. The York loli-meet in less than three weeks, which I am reeeeally looking forward to (although eek! I really have to get sewing!). Hopefully I'll be able to get to one of the big car meets or drag races this season, although sadly I've already missed Fins 'n Chrome as my parents were away that weekend.
What else? Hmmm. Other than that (my word, my life is dull!), I hope we have some good weather this summer so I can make good use of the yard. I want dinner parties! And picnics with ginger beer in the park! And warm, balmy evenings suitable for elegant outdoor lounging with cocktails and barbeques ♥.

Right, I should go sort out some dinner before Doctor Who starts. This episode looks amazing, hopefully well worth the two week-long wait. "Biggest library in the universe", you say? OMG, yes plz.

"Step AWAY from the thesaurus!" [May. 19th, 2008|01:37 am]

[Current Mood | tired]

This post bought to you by the really-not-recommended but deadline-necessitated combination of thyrotoxicosis, Nescafe and sleep deprivation delirium.

So, there's only so many times the phrase 'linguistically-diverse environment' can be used in one essay (that number being one), and, as my brain would much rather be sleeping right now, my thesaurus-fu is woefully poor. Staring at pages thinking "is 'rich' a good enough synonym for 'diverse' or no, I wonder?" is not getting me far, but noticing that among the suggestions for alternatives for 'rich' were both 'dark' and 'bright', and both 'vivid' and 'mellow' did cause me some amusement. (Yes, yes, I know. That's why I'm an English major).

It's things like this that make me glad to have English as a first language. I can only imagine the headaches that things like this must cause to those learning our often ridiculously illogical tongue.

'Rich' does have some great alternatives, though. I am rather fond of 'sumptuous', 'florid' (thank you, Lestat, for that one), 'mellifluous' and 'opulent'. Had I my copy of 'Tale of the Body Thief' in the house, I would recount one of favourite quotes, on 'wallowing in opulence' (Lestat again, or possibly Louis. Anne Rice: queen of exquisitely florid verbosity), but alas, that opportunity for procrastination is lost due to my restrictively small bookshelf.

I think I should maybe just leave this until tomorrow morning when I'm a little more coherent. Apologies for spamming your flist page with my nonsense.

Just a few pictures of the new girl, Tabby. I was actually trying to photograph the faceup, but I got lucky and the lighting turned out unusually well, so I'm quite pleased with these. I also got a bit
carried away with layers and screens in Photoshop, but I kinda like it, makes a change to the natural style that better suits my other guys. Looking at these, I think I'm gonna redo the faceup; the freckles barely show up on camera and I'm not happy with the eyelashes anyway, too dark.

So yes, another girl, how did that happen?! When I first got into BJDs, the only sculpts I really wanted were male, and of the quartet of characters I wanted to doll-ify (which were the only ones I intended to get, back then) 3/4 are male. Ah well, more opportunities for pretty clothes, hm?

Details if anyone cares (or if any BJD folk should stumble into here and want reference); doll is CP Kid Delf Ani in the now-discontinued normal skin, old-style girl body.

Character based on is Tabitha Sheehy, an (at present) minor character in my 'verse, Sable's cousin and daughter of Fenn's boss. Age ~13, tomboyish, wanna-be-but-too-middle class-to-be street urchin type, can be bit of a smart-arse but generally good kid, hangs around with some mischievous sorts but doesn't cause too much trouble.

She needs some different, high-quality eyes, and eventually I want to compile some sort of Victorian street child + cute punk style outfit, but for now it's handmade clothes :)

Edit: OMG. OMG like... guh. I know no-one on my flist follows Tsubasa, but I don't care, I need to flail.

Chapter 185 = utter win, just... wow. I... am reduced to puddle of incoherent fangirly goo. Clamp, as long as this moment of pure awesome is not just making up for some up-coming cruelty, I forgive you for the previous, somehow-just-off chapter, because wow. Bitchslapping? Finger licking? You know how to make our brains melt. I like this new assertive Fai. A lot. And so does Kurogane.

A belated New Year's post [Jan. 9th, 2008|01:00 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | restless]
[Current Music |Ladytron - The Venus In Furs]

Yes, it's a little late, but here it goes anyway.

So, 2008 already; we're almost through another decade! 2007 was a mixed experience for me, a year of change, I guess, not all good. I won't go over the bad points, but there were good points too! Going on holiday with friends (and not falling out); all of us successfully organising more parties, outings and events; trying and discovering new things; and meeting lots of wonderful people.
The last one was particularly relevant this year; as well as meeting more friends-of-friends and attending my first Lolita meet (and being delighted at how lovely and not-snobby everyone was ♥ ), the BJD hobby has vastly improved both my social life and creativity. As I only started getting into the social side of it last November, we've come a long way. The Yorkshire community seems to have developed a lot, I've met lots of great people, and I would certainly have never expected to be now living with one of them, so this hobby has certainly been good to me this past year :)
The biggest change this year was of course moving out of the family home and renting a house myself. A scary thing, having to sort out bills, taxes, etc, but I'm enjoying having my own place, decorating and organising it, even the cleaning!

2008 is, I think, going to be a year of hard work and big decisions, education-wise. Finishing (hopefully!) second year and moving on to third means I have to narrow down my field of study and decide which areas I want to focus on for the rest of my academic life, and any reduction of options is a scary time! Of course, there's also that horrid monster called Dissertation to think about too.

However: one step at a time. Before that, I have new classes to look forward to. In particular: Japanese! I start Japanese continuation in three weeks, really looking forward to it. I was fortunate to be able to join Continuation when I didn't do the beginner's class here, as the material I covered at Yamasa seems to be equivalent to the Beginner and most of the Continuation level here. Which is just as well, as I've forgotten so much, I really need to revise it all D:

Hope you all have a happy, healthy, successful and enjoyable 2008!

Dear self; you appear to have been watching Naruto for the past three hours. Yes, NARUTO. In fact, you've been watching it every day for the past week. WTF?! How the hell did this happen?
Actually, I think it came about through having no TV, limited internet, and having no DVDs that I haven't already seen, followed by discovery of discs of 40 episodes that I was given by a lovely German biochemist I met in Japan. Still; NARUTO. I fear for myself.
Possibly this is a sign that I need to stop being such a freaking hermit and go outside and socialise with human beings.

Um, in other news; I am sick with another cold (or possibly some Viking plague that Kafers bought home from work, who knows), buuuuut, the new house is going well! Even though it's terribly cold, I'm still really pleased with it. Although having to handle bills and taxes is terrifying, it's really nice having my own place. Plus, I have a Kafers as a housemate! ♥

Anyway, the first point of this post is to say; go watch the new CLAMP In Wonderland OVA! It's so good XD It's a music video featuring their series from 1995-2006, so go play Name That Character! Possibly only really funny if you know the series it's referring to, but still cracktastic. (See my new Kamui icon).
Er yeah, but the real point is: Autumn photos!

[Current Mood | annoyed]

So there's 2 inches of water in our back garden and water coming up through the drains in the road. Yeah, this is how the floods of 2000 started, so we're taking no chances this time and moving everything up off the floor. Lets see if Yorkshire Water respond this time, we got sandbags two days after flooding last time.
As far as I know, 2000 was the only time in its 50ish years this house has ever flooded, so if it's at risk again you can't tell me there's nothing happening to our climate. That, and our seasons are all screwed up and the weather in general's been getting weirder each year.
The weather here has been crazy recently, completely bipolar, and we've had a ridiculous amount of rain. The Met Office says it should be easing off in the next few days, but York tends to get floods a few days after rain as the water runs off the hills. The local news has been quite horrific; 4 feet flooding in some villages, and a guy drowned today after getting trapped in a manhole. But as the 2000 flooding was mostly due to the Council not knowing there was a beck running under our street (even though the residents did) and hence it hadn't been cleared in over a decade, we thought we'd be safe now.
Luckily the water doesn't seem to be rising, maybe the Council's doing something somewhere, so we'll see how it goes. Argh.
Oh, and don't worry, Kafers: I've moved all your stuff upstairs :)

Edit: All's well. The water went down a bit by itself, and a fire engine turned up to pump the rest out :D
So we're alright this time, let's hope the rain does ease off.
Feel sorry for Pocklington though; the whole village got hit, apparently there was a river going through the marketplace D:

Um, it's kind of awkward to write it out, but blogs should record important life events, and I also need to apologise to those I'm usually in contact with for being rather absent lately.
Merlin, our border collie cross, has been ill this past week, and he was put to sleep this morning. He was in the early stages of kidney failure and had tumours throughout his abdomen, he had exploratory surgery today but they found too many tumours to operate on, and we agreed it'd be kinder to not wake him up. He could have had maybe another two weeks, but he would have gone downhill a lot and been in pain, so it wouldn't have been fair. He was 14 years old, so he did pretty well. I've never known another dog quite so expressive (and empathetic) as him, and even though he hadn't been eating or sleeping well in the past two weeks, and had lost a lot of weight, he was still  his usual playful, alert self.
We had him 14 years, my sister and I grew up with him, he really was part of the family. The house is very empty without him.

Well the Fins & Chrome show was pretty good, and our Delray actually made it all the way there and back (80m) in one piece. There's still a LOT of work to do on her, but she's running well at the moment! The weather was so dull and wet I didn't get to take any good photos, so I may just post some at the end of this show season.
The show was held in the grounds of Preston Hall, which also houses a small heritage museum, my favourite part of which is a reconstruction of an Edwardian-era street of shops (a real, outdoor street, unlike York Castle Museum). Chemist, toymaker's, watchmaker's, ironmonger's, &c, and a musical instrument shop which had SHELVES of wax cylinders and gramophones <3 <3  Aaanyway, there was a printing shop (as in woodblock, printing press), and the lovely guy in there was kind enough to tell me the story behind the Stonegate devil. Apparently, apprentice printers are known as 'devils'. Don't know why, but mystery solved! There's also one in Dublin and one in London. Also, boxes of jumbled sorts (fonts) are called 'hell boxes' ("'cos they're un 'elluva job ter sort"). And, he told me, printers should, legally, be addressed as 'Sir' and are allowed to carry a sword, due to still-surviving rights from when printers were gentlemen because they were among the few who could read and write. Oooh!

Pictures! )

Went shopping today with [info]cicak and Freja, and went to Asia Gourmet for dinner. It's a new Japanese/Chinese/Korean restaurant that's just opened and, well, I'm very impressed! Previously, the only Japanese eatery in York was Buzz; which is nice, but too modern and westernised and very over-priced. Asia Gourmet on the other hand is so much more authentic and casual. It has noren curtains, Chinese and Japanese music, and even plastic food in the window! The first time I saw that I think I almost cried with joy, and did actually phone Sarah and OMG!squee at her. Since I got back from Japan, I've only been to a Japanese restaurant once, and the only place I've seen with a plastic food window display is in Newcastle's chinatown. Obviously nothing can compare to rice balls from Seiyu, or lunch at Hane-shokudo, or grape Liptons from Mini-Stop, or melon-pan from Feel News, or cheesecake from the Cheesecake Cafe in Shinjuku, or, or... *sob*  Buuuut, finding odd bits of Japanese foody stuff (like discovering Pocari Sweat in the Korean supermarket) always brings back fond memories, and of course it's delicous anyway :)
Back to today; I had Miso soup, chicken katsu-don and green tea, and it was delicious. Freja had the grilled eel, Sarah the mixed tenpura, and those were just as fabulous. Then the (ever-so lovely!) waitress told us the chef was developing some takeout lunches, and asked us if we could possibly sample some sushi for them! Of course we wouldn't mind! :D So we had free sushi too, and it was amazing, the best I've had outside of Japan. So Asia Gourmet gets a 'recommended!' from us. Conveniently, it's also only 3 minutes from uni, so I think I've got my lunches sorted for next year :)
